Musical Bridges Artistic Director Anya Grokhovski and Alena Gorina (Duo AleAnya) performed at University of Texas at Austin on April 10th, 2014. Duo AleAnya performed their Rachmaninoff, Scriabin, Shostakovich piano program for the class of Professor of Slavic Studies Gilbert C. Rappaport. Mr. Rappaport and the class was very thankful for Duo AleAnyas visit-for sharing their gift of artistic performance and personal enthusiasm for what they do! After an extensive search conducted by the Board of Directors and CEO-Suhail Arastu was selected as Musical Bridges new Director of Development & Marketing. Suhail’s worldly experience and exceptional communication skills won over the selection committee! Suhail joined MBAW’s Board of Directors as a member in 2010 and became Vice President in 2013. Musical Bridges Around the World is proud to report another successful segment of our community outreach Kids to Concerts program at no charge to the schools visited! Last Thursday & Friday Antonio Granjero and Estefania Ramirez of Entreflamenco Company visited 5 San Antonio schools: Larkspur Elementary, Stone Oak Elementary, Madison Elementary, Scobee Elementary & Collins Garden Elementary. MBAW’s interactive and exciting program incorporated TEKS and STEM curriculum-teaching the culture and geography of Spain through music. Musical Bridges’ Art Gallery hosted its third opening of the season on Saturday, April 5th. The opening celebrated “Dream Worlds,” the first US exhibit of internationally renowned batik, silk painter and shibori artist Tanya Rachytskaya. The opening also served as the grand opening of Musical Bridges’ expansion into the suite next door. A constant flow of over 100 guests moved throughout the newly renovated gallery-enjoying art, wine, hors d’oeuvres, and live jazz piano by Heinz Frommeyer. MBAW Development Director Suhail Arastu was one of eight men and women honored for their crusade for public good at North Star Gives, last Thursday March 20, 2014. Guests enjoyed a swanky atmosphere with fashion shows by Saks Fifth Avenue, music, cocktails, and hors d’oeuvres during the two hour event at the North Star Mall last week. Tickets were $20.00 per person in advance or $30.00 at the door and sales went directly to the charity from which they were purchased. We opened the festival on Saturday, 22 February with the help of our ever-great, jazz arm: Bradley Kayser, Chuck & Anne Parrish, Sherry Layman and of course our very own, James Sanders! President Eric Miller received The Lifetime Achievement Award for Chamber Music Patronage at the start of the program and his lovely wife Michelle and all three children were present on stage to share in this great honor! After months of planning, scheduling and coordinating-the inaugural Kids’ World Music Festival debuted yesterday in the Laurie Auditorium at Trinity University. About 1,500 students from all over San Antonio were bussed to Trinity for the one-of-a-kind festival. Students were introduced to cultures from Russia, Africa, and Spain during the hour-and-a-half program. The Festival was exciting for all ages as students were in grades K-12. Each 25 minute segment featured a different culture; teaching state curriculum compliant material through song and dance. Musical Bridges Around the World would like to announce a new and exciting partnership with BJ’s Restaurant in Stone Oak! Marketing Manager Kim Adamski called the MBAW office after hearing a radio segment about the Kids to Concerts and other MBAW programs. Ms. Adamski recruited 12 of her staff members to volunteer at the Kids’ World Music Festival on February 25th. BJ’s corporate office will be writing a check which will be matched by MBAW’s generous Board of Directors-as well as providing food for all of the festival musicians!

Musical Bridges Around the World just signed a lease to expand its office and art gallery space to the suite next door. We are looking forward to the expansion of wall-space for the next art opening and adding a few new offices. We are also planning to use the space to conduct master classes and community workshops with our guest artists for San Antonio youth. A grand piano will take center stage in the new space. Musical Bridges Around the World recently completed its African phase of community outreach Kids to Concerts program at no charge to the schools visited. Originally from Senegal, Africa and New York City, African musicians Abdou Mboup, Mar Gueye, and Craig Rivers performed at 10 schools (Wanke Elementary, Steubing Elementary, Locke Hill Elementary, Oak Meadow Elementary, Red Oak Elementary, McDermott Elementary, Rayburn Elementary, Vestal Elementary, Kriewald Road Elementary and Colonies North Elementary) over four days last week and introduced kids to African culture through music, colorful folk costumes and ethnic instruments. Saturday, January 25th, Musical Bridges’ Art Gallery held it’s second opening. Susan Dunis, permanent San Antonio artist and one of MBAW’s founders “wowed” guests with her unique glowing adoration of nature. More than 100 people stopped by to celebrate and admire Susan’s artwork. Musical Bridges ever-famous hospitality included beautiful guitar music by Robert Garcia, as well as a fabulous wine and hors d’oeuvres reception. Many of Susan’s pieces were sold, with more sales still pending. Susan’s exhibit at Musical Bridges’ Art Gallery will be available for viewing through March 16th. Yesterday Musical Bridges’ Artistic Director Anya Grokhovski returned from New York where she attended the Chamber Music America Conference. The purpose of this trip was to find new and exciting talent for Musical Bridges’ future programming and take part in ongoing conversations about the future of chamber music in America. Workshops and artist showcases presented an impressive group of young and seasoned musicians with very diverse programming. Many musical offerings included unexpected instrumentations and were truly high-end chamber ensembles. Musical Bridges Around the World just completed its first artist’s show on Monday, January 13, 2014. During this time over 150 people stopped by to admire beautiful work by Rex Hausmann. Many of his pieces were purchased by avid art lovers from all over San Antonio. This show was the beginning of a new creative endeavor for Musical Bridges and we are looking forward to many more! MBAW’s own Artistic Director Anya Grokhovski and concert pianist Alena Gorina performed a piano recital Monday night in Austin. The piano program for 4 hands of Mozart, Faure, Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky was a benefit for a charity and was received with great enthusiasm by the audience. This artistic collaboration marks new beginning – the birth of a new piano duo between Anya and Alena. We are looking forward to future artistic projects of these talented, dynamic and beautiful Russian girls!

The Musical Bridges Board of Directors has generously donated $25,000, matching funds $1 for $1 toward the Kids’ World Music Initiative! MBAW created the fundraiser challenge to help raise $50,000 for the Kids’ World Music Initiative scheduled for the spring of 2014. All of the money raised will help introduce 27,000 children from San Antonio to cultures from Africa, Spain, Russia, Syria, India and Cuba through beautiful music, bright folk costumes and educational curriculum.
