2014 Kids’ World Music Festival

After months of planning, scheduling and coordinating-the inaugural Kids’ World Music Festival debuted yesterday in the Laurie Auditorium at Trinity University. About 1,500 students from all over San Antonio were bussed to Trinity for the one-of-a-kind festival. Students were introduced to cultures from Russia, Africa, and Spain during the hour-and-a-half program. The Flying Balalaika Brothers from Austin visited 8 schools (Eisenhower Middle School, Garcia Middle School, Science and Technology Charter School, Vestal Elementary School, Indian Creek Elementary School, Hidden Cove School, Krueger Middle School, and Longfellow Middle School) over three days in November and introduced kids to Russian culture through music, colorful folk costumes and ethnic instruments. This year MBAW is targeting middle school students, presenting 25 concerts in mostly Title One middle schools in several different San Antonio public school districts, at no cost to schools visited.  Texas Title One schools are those most persistently low achieving, and most in need of improvement.  Studies have shown middle schoolers are at a “jumping off point” in their education, open to new ideas and engaged in their world.  These are influential years in their education, and an important time to create opportunities for real learning about the world.  Many of the students in the Title I schools we visit never travel outside their...

On December 3rd and 4th, the exotic melodies of Galician bagpiper Cristina Pato rang out for public school students in five Kids to Concerts “Spanish Sojourn” performances. Over 1,500 children from Memorial, Morningside and Klein Road Elementary Schools in New Braunfels ISD, and 800 children from MH Specht and Timberwood Park Elementary Schools in Comal ISD participated.
