Gurwitz Laureates in Concert | Russell Hill Rogers Musical Evenings at San Fernando Cathedral

2024 Gurwitz Gold Medalist Yungyung Guo (China), Silver Medalist Tatiana Dorokhova (Russia) and Bronze Medalist Young Sun Choi (South Korea) return to San Antonio with mesmerizing piano artistry following their award-winning performances at The Gurwitz International Piano Competition back in February 2024.

The program will feature the world premiere of a commissioned work for piano six hands by Grammy Award-winning producer and composer Michael Fine titled “San Antonio Celebration“.  Fine was formerly Vice President of Artists & Repertoire at Deutsche Grammophon and was one of the six live competition judges of the 2024 Gurwitz Competition.

Yungyung Guo, Gold (China)

Born in Hong Kong, Yungyung Guo began her piano study at the age of four. She is currently studying with Moye Chen at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. She previously graduated from the Affiliated Middle School to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music under the guidance of Jia Xie. She has been awarded the People’s Scholarship, the Shanghai Scholarship, and the Lily En-Teh New Scholarship.

Yungyung was awarded the Gold Medal from The Gurwitz International Piano Competition, Second Prize from the New Orleans International Piano Competition, Third Prize from the Sydney International Piano Competition, the Gold Medal with High Distinction from the Manhattan International Music Competition, and first prizes from the World Piano Teachers Association International Piano Competition, Artciál International Piano Competition, G-Clef International Music Competition, Pacific Stars International Piano Competition and Orbetello International Piano Competition. She is also a laureate of the NextGen International Piano Competition, WPTA Spain International Piano Competition, WPTA Singapore International Piano Competition, the Sviatoslav Richter International Piano Competition and the “Young Talents” Concerto Competition.

Yungyung has performed at the Basilica Di San Pietro Concert Hall (Italy), and renowned Chinese venues such as National Centre for the Performing Arts (Beijing), Shanghai Grand Theatre, Shanghai Concert Hall, Shangyin Opera House, He Luting Concert Hall, Hangzhou Grand Theater, Shangyin Opera House, Ningbo Concert Hall and Hongtai Concert Hall in Xiamen. She has appeared worldwide as a soloist and chamber musician at music festivals, giving an acclaimed performance at Music Fest Perugia with the Brunensis Virtuosi Orchestra under the baton of Gaddiel Dombrowner and with the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra under Xiao-ou Zhao.

Yungyung’s top prize at the Manhattan International Competition also led to a recording opportunity under the Orpheus label, with her album to be released soon.

Tatiana Dorokhova, Silver (Russia)

Performances by Tatiana Dorokhova always present an extraordinary involvement in musical material, depth and thoughtfulness, as each one reveals new facets of the music. She performs with virtuosity, a sensitive touch, a sense of style and form, and a clear understanding of the cultural context. She deftly performs music encompassing all eras – from the Baroque to the present.

Born to a family of musicians, Tatiana started piano at age six and attended the Children’s Music School No. 14 in Volgograd under Mrs. Anna Cherfas. She then studied at the Central Music School and the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory under the tutelage of Alexander Mndoyants. Tatiana’s early performances were repeatedly noted by distinguished musicians to be full of maturity.

Dorokhova won the Silver Medal from The Gurwitz International Piano Competition in 2024 (San Antonio, Texas). She won 2nd place in the 2024 George Enescu International Competition (Rumania), 3rd prize in the 2024 Santa Cecilia International Piano Competition (Portugal). She won 1st prizes in the 2004 International Competition of Young Pianists (Russia) and the 2008 International Competition of Young Pianists named after V.V.Krainev (Ukraine). She has also been a laureate in the 2011 International Piano Competition “Premio Jaén” (Spain), the 2014 Silvio Bengalli International Piano Competition (Italy), the 2017 Johann Nepomuk Hummel International Piano Competition (Slovakia), the 2018 Rising Stars Grand Prix International Music Competition Berlin (Germany), and the 2022 New Orleans International Piano Competition (U.S.).
Tatiana has performed with the St. Petersburg, Moscow and Berlin Philharmonic, at the Cortot Hall in Paris, and in numerous chamber music collaborations. Tatiana has recorded for the Anthology of Russian and Soviet Piano Music series released by record label Melodiya, and is a student of Stanislav Ioudenitch at Park University, Missouri.

A winner of the 26th Rina Sala Gallo Monza International Piano Competition, Young Sun Choi has won top awards in other competitions such as the Gurwitz International Piano Competition, Bösendorfer USASU International Piano Competition, American International Paderewski Piano Competition, Franz Schubert and Modern Music International Chamber Music Competition, and Lyon International Piano Competition. She has also been awarded US scholarships including the Mildred E. Allen Memorial Piano Award from Indianapolis Matinee Musicale, and the Ham Merit Award and O’Meara Merit Award from the National Society of Arts and Letters.

Choi has performed with the Italian Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi, Korean Broadcasting System Symphony Orchestra, Prime Philharmonic Orchestra, Kazan Chamber Orchestra “La Primavera”, and Indiana University Symphony Orchestra. Her solo performances include the Fazioli Concert Hall (Italy), Paderewski Festival (U.S.), and Kumho Art Hall (South Korea). A member of Trio Unio, Choi has also performed as part of a piano trio at the Alpensia Concert Hall and Perigee Hall (South Korea).

Starting piano at age six, Young Sun Choi studied at Seoul Arts School under Jung Won Moon. She then earned a national scholarship and attended Seoul National University, studying under Aviram Reichert and musicologist Hee-Sook Oh. After graduating summa cum laude, Choi then earned her masters at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Since 2018, she has been studying with Arnaldo Cohen for her doctorate and serving as an associate piano instructor at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.

How do I get a ticket?
Tickets are available on this page or on Eventbrite.

What do I show at the door/check-in?
To help our attendants, please have your ticket ready when you get there. Attendants will be ready to scan the QR code located on your ticket (print, email, or app). If you lose your ticket, please tell the attendant your first and last name.

What if I forget to register?
An attendant at the door can help you register quickly and easily. We do not turn away guests if space is available.

What are the current health protocols I need to follow?
Masks/social distancing is not currently required.

How do I get to the San Fernando Cathedral? Where do I park?
The San Fernando Cathedral lies at the center of downtown San Antonio at 115 Main Plaza, San Antonio, TX 78205. While there is no dedicated parking for the Cathedral, there are many close parking options. City Paystations and meters are FREE on Sundays, and you can find more info and paid garage/lot options on our website here. Note that there are three (3) main entrances to the Cathedral: two (2) front (east) entrances off Main Plaza and one (1) ADA-accessible side entrance on the left (south) Cathedral side.

Can I take pictures or video?
No flash photography. We would love for you to capture and share your experience, but we do ask that you be conscientious of others and the artists during the performance so as not to disrupt the event.
