After smashing successes in Australia, Hong Kong, Canada and Mexico, Barynya is coming to San Antonio! With its bright costumes, fairy music and unparalleled sophistication of Russian dance school a group of six dancers and five musicians will invite San Antonio visitors and locals into the world of colorful Russian fairytales. The program will include iconic Dark Eyes, Long Road, Moscow Nights, Kalinka and many others.

“…Beautiful performance helped make the Global Festival such a memorable evening… I could not be more impressed. I was up and out of my seat, dancing alone with them for just about every dance…”

Russian born ethnomusicologist, Mikhail Smirnov, Artistic Director/Founder of Barynya, will narrate the performance. He received his Master’s degree from the Moscow State University of Culture and Arts. Prior to coming to the United States in 1991, Mikhail was a soloist in Moscow State Center for Russian song, “Russkaya Pesnya”, under the direction of Nadezhda Babkina. While living in Moscow, Mikhail followed his passion for folk culture by traveling to many regions of Russia to collect Russian folklore at its source where he recorded over 100 hours of Russian folk music and dances. Later he incorporated much of this original material into the repertoire of “Barynya”.

Mikhail Smirnov and dancers of Barynya ensemble were featured on national TV, NBC’s “SUPERSTARS OF DANCE” an international dance competition led by executive producers Nigel Lythgoe and Simon Fuller (American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance). This dance competition was hosted by Michael Flatley (“Lord of the Dance”) and Susie Castillo, a former Miss USA. Mikhail Smirnov was one of eight judges to decide which country would win.
