The international music festival is at the Empire Theater, and features jazz piano, violin music and members of the San Antonio Symphony. The event consists of seven free concerts in 10 nights. Minimalism in the middle of nowhere or cultural shock of Marfa!

Minimalism in the middle of nowhere or cultural shock of Marfa!

Please, those of you art critics, do me a favor and duck-tape your mouth for a minute to give me a chance to express Minimalism as I see it. Ready? Total silence is deafening! When there is no sound but just the beauty of earthy tones meeting the blues of a sky in a still line of the horizon; when a passing car many miles away is a sound sensation; when you cannot hear anything but your thoughts and occasional insect running it’s errands. In the middle of this soundless beauty, literally in the middle of nowhere, you find the works of New York minimalists in their full glory enlightening a former military base… all 38 building of it!!!!...

San Antonio Magazine: Child Prodigies Concert Spotlights Successful SA Youth

Playing the violin as a child was a given for Nancy Zhou. Her parents moved to San Antonio from China so her father could play with the San Antonio Symphony and as a violin instructor, he insisted that his daughter be among his students. “He thought it was the one thing he could pass down to me, so he started teaching me when I was 4,” says Zhou. The Keystone School and Harvard graduate didn’t fall in love with the instrument at first. But after years of practice, she went on to become a soloist, playing with YOSA in her early teens, appearing with the San Antonio Symphony and touring in Asia and Europe during college. Now 24, she’ll return...

Northern Lights by Louis Vega at MBAW

Northern Lights by Louis Vega at MBAW

Louis Vega Trevino’s painting reflects a deep understanding of historical precedents. Without any derivative step, he has built upon a number of important, painterly languages to evolve a style that is instantly recognizable as uniquely his own. Trevino’s painting recalls not only the atmospheric color fields of Mark Rothko and Julies Olitski, but also that indeterminate margin where color field interests merge with the geometric and optical abstraction of Gene Davis and Richard Anuszkiewicz. It is in that margin that Trevino’s work finds its form, an area once explored by Morris Louis and which Trevino’s color-charged compositions have...

From Moussor to Tignon: The Evolution of the Head-tie

From Moussor to Tignon: The Evolution of the Head-tie

Photographs by Juliana Kasumu From Moussor to Tignon is a collection of works completed by Juliana Kasumu during her summer residency with the Olaju Art Group in New Orleans, LA. Through this photo-essay, she explores the evolution of the headwrap worn by women of color as a means for cultural reclamation during the 18th century. Kasumu’s focus is the cultural exchange between Creoles in Louisiana and signares in Senegal, who wore this style as a form of social protest against oppressive tactics from colonial powers. The headwrap has since become notorious for symbolizing a variety of movements related to African-American culture...

by James Dykman, photography by Natalia Sun Socializing with incredible people. Immersing yourself in phenomenal music. Binding together the threads of local and international relations. No better things in life and it is thanks to the FineTunerz for such an opportunity. Before I talk more about the event, it’s important to start with the space. Blue Star Contemporary Arts, the first and longest-running venue for contemporary art in San Antonio, is housed at the epicenter of San Antonio’s Southtown art district. A place where culture thrives and energy electrifies, the gallery provides a space inside the maelstrom of sensation in which not...
