The application process for The 2024 Gurwitz International Piano Competition has now opened! Application deadline is 1 July 2023.

Performers between the ages of 18 & 32 (inclusive) as of 26 January 2024 are encouraged to apply; 12 contestants will be accepted as competitors to be flown to San Antonio, Texas for four rounds of live competition.

An esteemed panel of judges led by Chief Conductor/Artistic Director of the Mexico City Philharmonic, Scott Yoo, will narrow down contestants each round until Gold ($30K), Silver ($20K), and Bronze Medalists ($10K) are selected in finale Round IV with full symphony orchestra!

Live Competition Schedule and Awards

Round I  (27 – 28 January 2024)
12 contestants compete. Junior Jury Award winner selected at end of round.

Round II (30 January 2024)
6 semifinalists compete. Performances must feature a work(s) from composer(s) of Latin or Spanish origin. Best Performance of a Work by Latin or Spanish Composer winner selected at end of round.

Round III (1 February 2024)
3 finalists perform a commissioned work in a chamber music format with acclaimed guest artists. Audience Favorite Award selected at end of round.

Round IV (3 February 2024)
3 finalists perform with a full symphony orchestra under the baton of Scott Yoo, competing for Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medals.

 

Awards & Prizes

  • Gold Medal: $30,000 USD
  • Silver Medal: $20,000 USD
  • Bronze Medal: $10,000 USD
  • Additional Prizes include: Junior Jury Award, Best Performance of a Work by Latin or Spanish Composer, and the Audience Favorite Award

 

Application Cost

A $125 (USD) application fee must be paid through the Acceptd platform.

 

Eligibility Requirements

Contestants must meet and agree to the following criteria to submit an application for this program:

  • Between the ages of 18 – 32 (inclusive) as of Friday, January 26, 2024.
  • Not a former Gold Medalist of The Gurwitz International Piano Competition or the San Antonio International Piano Competition (previous title).
  • I am not a student or a family member of a competition Judge, or preliminary audition Judge. The Gurwitz 2024 Judges are Riccardo Castro, Tanja Dorn, Michael Fine, Mikhail Voskresensky, Scott Yoo, Lilya Zilberstein. Preliminary Judges are Pasquale Iannone and Jiale Li.
