Sophia Gilmson

Credited with a “brilliant driving performance” (The Houston Chronicle) and a “one of the most refreshing and thought-provoking performances this season” (The Austin American- Statesman), a Russian-born pianist Sophia Gilmson blends together a unique amalgam of a Russian-American artist and pedagogue. A winner of the New York Young Artists in Recital Competition, Gilmson performed extensively in her native Russia, the USA, and Europe to a high critical acclaim. In 2001, she was awarded the prestigious Mount Everest Award by the Austin Critics Table Austin American-Statesman ranked her performance of the Goldberg Variations on harpsichord and piano in the same evening as one of the top ten arts events of 2001, calling it “unforgettable”. In the celebration of its 20th anniversary, Austin’s Performing Arts Center included this concert in the list of twenty most memorable programs of its history, one per year. Her studio recording of the Goldberg Variations on harpsichord and piano won Silver Medal from the Global Music Award and earned a high praise from the Fanfare Magazine “I can now say that Sophia Gilmson has gone where no one has gone before, and if you have the slightest interest in Bach’s Goldberg Variations, it is imperative that you acquire this set.”

A dedicated educator, Sophia Gilmson has had her students among the winners of the competitions on state, national, and international levels. Her unique pedagogical skills are universally recognized at both pre-college and collegiate levels. She has received an array of excellence in teaching awards, including the Collegiate Teaching Achievement Award of Texas. Sophia Gilmson presented workshops and master-classes at the national and international conferences and festivals.
Sophia Gilmson has graduated cum laude from the famed St. Petersburg (Leningrad) Conservatory where she studied with Vitaly Margulis.

She has been on the faculty of the University of Texas Butler School of Music since 1993.
