Prado received a Doctorate of Musical Arts in piano performance at the University of Texas at Austin’s Butler School of Music in 2014. Prior to doctoral study\, Prado attended Columbia University for undergraduate study and New York University for a Master’s Degree. From 2003-2009\, Prado was Music Director and announcer at Trinity University’s jazz radio station – KRTU 91.7FM – and is currently the host of “Aaron Prado Presents” – heard Sundays 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. In 2011\, Prado debuted his “San Antonio Jazz Suite” – a large-scale composition scored for big band\, string quartet\, and narration depicting the story of San Antonio. In 2015\, Prado published a book of transcriptions of solo recordings by jazz pianist Bill Evans (published by Hal Leonard). \nIn 2018\, Prado received the Paul Elizondo Grant for the Performing Arts from The Artist Foundation of San Antonio to compose a concert work called “The Hero’s Journey” and the piece premiered at Luminaria 2018 at the Instituto Cultural de Mexico\, as well as “Sister Cities”\, a jazz ensemble work commissioned by Musical Bridges Around the World that brought together musicians from San Antonio’s Sister and Friendship Cities to celebrate SA’s 300th Anniversary. In 2019\, Prado released two new CDs “Live at Jazz\, TX” with his sextet and a trio album of original music titled “And Now…” Prado teaches music at Northwest Vista College and performs regularly in the South Texas area with his ensembles. \nIn 2023\, Dr. Prado was hired by Musical Bridges Around the World to be the Music Director and backing soundtrack composer of their documentary film “The Quilt: A Living History of African American Music“. In 2024\, he was also commissioned by MBAW to compose an ensemble piece for Round III of The Gurwitz International Piano Competition\, for which he wrote the Aztec myth-inspired “El Colibrí y la Cempasúchil“\, paying homage to San Antonio’s cultural heritage. Prado is currently a regular performer at Jazz\, TX at the Pearl and other San Antonio venues with various ensembles. \n \n \n \n \n \n George Prado - bass\n \nGeorge Prado is a veteran bassist and cornerstone of the San Antonio jazz community. A native of the city’s West Side\, Prado has built a career of more than five decades as a performer\, bandleader\, and mentor. After serving in the 279th Army Band in France and studying music in Los Angeles with acclaimed bassist Ralph Peña\, he performed with a wide range of jazz\, blues\, and R&B artists including Cab Calloway\, Eartha Kitt\, Mose Allison\, Chuck Berry\, and Clifford Scott. Joining him are bassist Kiyoshi Kitagawa and drummer Johnathan Blake\, two powerhouse musicians whose dynamic interplay and rhythmic precision combine Barron’s timeless style to deliver performances that are both innovative and steeped in jazz tradition\, promising an evening of pure musical brilliance. \nCheck out a clip of Kenny Barron here: \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n ABOUT THE ARTISTS: \n \n \n \n \n \n Kenny Barron\, piano\n Honored by The National Endowment for the Arts as a 2010 Jazz Master\, Kenny Barron has an unmatched ability to mesmerize audiences with his elegant playing\, sensitive melodies and infectious rhythms. The Los Angeles Times named him “one of the top jazz pianists in the world” and Jazz Weekly calls him “The most lyrical piano player of our time.” \nThe Philadelphia native started playing professionally as a teenager with Mel Melvin’s orchestra and Philly Joe Jones. He moved to New York City at 19 and freelanced with Roy Haynes\, Lee Morgan and James Moody\, after the tenor saxophonist heard him play at the Five Spot. Upon Moody’s recommendation Dizzy Gillespie hired Barron in 1962 without even hearing him play a note. It was in Dizzy’s band where Kenny developed an appreciation for Latin and Caribbean rhythms. After five years with Dizzy\, Barron played with Freddie Hubbard\, Stanley Turrentine\, Milt Jackson\, and Buddy Rich.  The early seventies found Kenny working with Yusef Lateef who Kenny credits as a key influence in his art for improvisation. \nEncouraged by Lateef\, to pursue a college education\, Barron balanced touring with studies and earned his B.A. in Music from Empire State College\, By 1973 Kenny joined the faculty at Rutgers University as professor of music.  He held this tenure until 2000\, mentoring many of today’s young talents including David Sanchez\, Terence Blanchard and Regina Bell. In 1974 Kenny recorded his first album as a leader for the Muse label\, entitled Sunset To Dawn. This was to be the first in over 40 recordings as a leader. His duo album with Stan Getz during the late 1980s\, People Time led to the first of 11 GRAMMY nominations received for his recordings.  Without Deception\, his 2020 follow up with bassist Dave Holland to The Art of Conversation (Impulse) was noted as one of the top releases of the year. The 2016 CD\, Book of Invention (Impulse) was Barron’s first trio outing in 20 years and marked the first recording ever with his bandmates bassist Kiyoshi Kitagawa and drummer Johnathan Blake. \nBarron consistently wins the jazz critics and readers polls\, including Downbeat\, Jazz Times and Jazziz magazines. The famed Spanish ceramist Lladro honored Mr. Barron with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012 and he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from his alma mater SUNY Empire State in 2013 and from Berklee College of Music in 2011. In 2009 he received the Living Legacy Award from Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation and was inducted into the American Jazz Hall of Fame and won a MAC Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. He is a seven-time recipient of Best Pianist by the Jazz Journalists Association. \n \n \n \n \n \n Kiyoshi Kitagawa\, bass\n Soon after moving to New York City from Osaka\, Japan\, Kiyoshi joined the Harper Brothers\, recording the Remembrance: Live at The Village Vanguard. Kiyoshi has toured and recorded Triology with the alto great Kenny Garrett and drummer Brian Blade and has gone on to work with many of the leading names in jazz including Tommy Flanagan\, Jimmy Heath\, Andy Bey and Maria Schneider\, just to name a few. In 1996\, he formed “The Trio” with the versatile Japanese pianist\, Makoto Ozone\, releasing four albums together. As a leader\, Kiyoshi has released five albums in Japan on the Atelier Sawano label including Ancestry\, Prayer\, followed by the DVD release of  Live at Tsutenkaku and Live in Japan all featuring Kenny Barron and Brian Blade. His latest release I’m Still Here features Danny Grissett and Brian Blade. As a sideman\, Kiyoshi has recorded with Pete Minger\, Jimmy Heath\, Terell Stafford\, Andy Bey\, Jon Faddis\, Kenny Barron and Dayna Stephens and many others. While at William Paterson University Johnathan started working professionally with the Oliver Lake Big Band\, Roy Hargrove\, and David Sanchez. He turned down an offer to join McCoy Tyner’s band to complete his Bachelors Degree and then went on to earn a Masters Degree from Rutgers University in 2007. He was awarded an ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award in 2006. Johnathan is currently a member of the Tom Harrell Quintet\, Russell Malone Quartet\, and Kenny Barron Trio. Gurwitz Youth Ambassadors are involved in community engagement efforts such as playing in schools or community groups\, attending/participating in masterclasses\, or speaking with students on why they chose piano. Advanced piano students 18 years or under who are interested in becoming an Ambassador are invited to apply based on the recommendation of their piano teacher. \n \n \n \n \n \n Colburn-Pledge Music Scholarship\n Formerly under the auspices of the Colburn-Pledge Music Scholarship Foundation\, this scholarship now resides under the management of Musical Bridges Around the World. The previously-named foundation began in 1985 by John Pledge with proceeds from the estates of his sister\, Genevieve Pledge\, and of Lois Colburn\, both former members of the San Antonio Symphony\, for the purpose of offering tuition aid to string players residing in Texas who are preparing for careers in classical music. 133 scholarships totaling more than $99\,000 had been previously awarded by the foundation to 72 different students. \n \n \n \n \n \n Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)\n – Are tickets required for entry to the concert?
