SUMMARY:Romani Rhapsody | Impresario Club
DESCRIPTION:Hungarian virtuoso violinist\, classical master\, jazz improviser\, and composer Roby Lakatos & His Ensemble make their San Antonio debut with one-of-a-kind fusions of contemporary\, classical and jazz elements with the folklore traditions of Hungarian Romani people. \nLakatos was born to a legendary musical family\, being a direct descendant of the famous “King of Gipsy Violinists” János Bihari\, who introduced Johannes Brahms to the themes for his Hungarian Dances and was admired by Beethoven and Liszt alike. Roby has stayed true to his musical legacy\, performing globally and with artists such as Herbie Hancock\, Randy Brecker\, and Joshua Bell. \nCheck out this excerpt from one of their performances in Belgium: \n \n \n \n \n \n \n ABOUT THE ARTISTS: \n \n \n \n \n \n Roby Lakatos & His Ensemble\n Roby Lakatos is not only a virtuoso on the violin\, but also an extremely versatile musician who is equally adept to performing classical music\, jazz and the folk idiom of his home country of Hungary. He is hard to define: most often\, he is described as a Gypsy violinist\, a devil’s fiddler\, classical master\, jazz improviser\, composer and arranger – and his unique artistic personality is all that. He is a universal musician combining brilliant technique that makes him one of the best violinists in the world with creativity in improvisation and composing power. \n\nRoby Lakatos usually performs with his Ensemble consists of exceptional string instrumentalists\, pianist and cimbalist and the group is often invited to play in orchestral arrangements. Roby’s Ensemble today is composed of virtuoso musicians with classical musical education who are also well versed in the folklore tradition of Hungarian Gypsies. Those guys definitely know how to warm up the audience; where to give jazz\, where to crumble with the tune of the violin pizzicato\, spill the piano passages and all of a sudden\, they all get together and lead to the final\, to an optimistic note! \nVilmos Csikos (double bass) was born into a family of musicians in Budapest – his mother played the violin and his father was one of the best gypsy bassists in the country. From an early age\, Vilmos was in contact with different music genres: American jazz\, classical music\, Romanian traditional music\, etc. His favorite instrument has always been the double bass\, but being too small to play at six\, he was first introduced to the piano. He attended classes at the famous Dugonics School in Budapest. During that time\, he won several national competitions. Vili regularly plays with Roby’s Ensemble since 2017. \nLubomír Gaspar\, a cimbalom player and arranger was born on October 14th 1989 in Banská Bystrica. For the first 15 years of his life he lived in the central part of Slovakia in a small town called Detva. The town is known for its still well-maintained\, rich folk-based tradition. Ľubomír comes from the most famous family of musicians from the region and its surroundings. His passion for music began to rise into attention at primary art school. \nLater on\, he studied at Conservatoire of J.L.Bell in Banská Bystrica attending classes of Mgr.art Martin Budinský. He developed his profound skills\, knowledge and experience while digging deeper into the beauty and sophistication of classical music\, what profoundly influenced his future musical career. \nDuring his studies\, he became acquainted with two important music genres that made a huge impact on his career path. One of the styles represents traditional Hungarian Gypsy music\, very specific for cimbalom. The other one is a genre of jazz music. At a very young age\, as a little boy he improvised to various musical themes\, folk songs as well as he composed his own songs. \nIn 2013\, he got a scholarship at J. Albrecht Music Academy in Banská Štiavnica. He graduated with a Master diploma under the leading wings of worldwide known cimbalom player Mgr.art Marcel Comendant. Ľubomír has established a number of musical projects\, holding concerts in his homeland of Slovakia as well as on an international spectrum. He is also a guest musician in various traditional\, jazz and world music ensembles. Ľubomír Gašpar is a significant cimbalom player who has created his own signature work in the music field during his musical career. \nRobert Szakcsi Lakatos (piano) from Budapest\, was part of Roby’s Ensemble from 2019. This exceptionally gifted jazz and classical pianist won the first prize of the solo piano competition at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2000. In 2005\, he was voted best soloist at the Avignon International Jazz Festival. Robert Lakatos has already recorded eight albums for Japanese label Atelier Sawano. \n \n \n \n \n \n Interested in this event and not a member? Click here to learn more

DESCRIPTION:A perfect blend of sound\, precision\, lightness and wit. These are the hallmarks of the Calmus Ensemble\, now one of the most successful vocal groups in Germany. This holiday a capella program will feature carols and Christmas music all the way from the 11th century to present. These five Leipzig musicians have won a whole string of international prizes and competitions and the reach of their activities is constantly expanding. Shaped by the centuries-old tradition of great German boys’ choirs\, they are at home in the vocal music of the Renaissance\, the Baroque and the Romantic. They revel in singing pop\, folk and jazz\, as well as chansons and golden oldies from the 1920s.  \n“The entire performance was nothing short of hypnotic. Calmus’ five members blended perfectly in their harmonies and left the audience in awed silence many a time\, before they finally broke out into applause.”– Kendall Mostafavi\, DC Metro Theatre Arts \n \n \n \n \n \n ABOUT THE ARTISTS \n \n \n \n \n \n Calmus Ensemble\n Elisabeth Mücksch – soprano; Maria Kalmbach – alto; Friedrich Bracks – tenor;Jonathan Saretz – baritone; Michael B. SUMMARY:The Big B's | Impresario Club
DESCRIPTION:The Janoska Ensemble\, with three Bratislava-born Janoska brothers and their bassist brother-in-law Julius Darvas\, have a special way of performing the well-known masterpieces of the greatest classics be they Mozart or the Beatles\, in a manner that renders them contemporary and distinctive. The Big B’s\, the ensemble’s latest album\, features works by composers such as Bach\, Beethoven\, Bartók\, Bernstein and Brubeck\, whose art always remained close to the world of improvisation. The works are arranged in the unmistakable Janoska style\, beyond the bounds of virtuosity and wit. \nCheck out this amazing promotional video for the Big B’s performance series and album! \n“The Janoska Ensemble is one of the most original groups of extremely talented musicians\, who are very unique in performing classical music\, jazz\, Latin and other genres. Their inspiration is inexhaustible and they deserve everyone’s attention and enthusiasm.” – Lalo Schifrin\, Composer \n \n \n \n \n \n ABOUT THE ARTISTS \n \n \n \n \n \n Janoska Ensemble\n Janoska EnsembleOndrej Janoska\, ViolinRoman Janoska\, ViolinFrantišek Janoska\, PianoJulius Darvas\, Double Bass \nThe musical universe is infinite and the galaxy of best-loved composers alone contains thousands of musical suns. Stylistically\, though\, these are often musical light-years apart. The Janoska Ensemble has set out to span intergalactic distance with its unique synthesis of musical worlds and its venture has won it an enthusiastic international public in a remarkably short time.  \nThe four young progenitors of this art – each with superb classical training – have combined their individual musical attainments to perfection: Ondrej\, František and Roman Janoska (three brothers from Bratislava) and their brother-in-law Julius Darvas (born and bred in Konstanz) are already successful in repeated engagements on four continents.  \nThe Janoska Ensemble has achieved the feat\, in the competitive jungle of today’s music scene\, of forging their specific style into their own brand and thus into a genre concept\, namely their Janoska Style\, transposing familiar references from classic to pop into an audibly related and yet quite new message. Nor is this all: each of their precision-tuned arrangements invariably carries the hallmark of the ensemble’s abounding musical invention\, the Janoska fingerprints. This fingerprinting – with an amazing range of expression from moving to thrilling – naturally shows up in the ensemble members’ own compositions. The Janoska Style possesses the rare ability to enthuse dedicated followers of totally opposing genres. Its vast reserves of positive energy electrify an audience after just a few bars; by the time they have embarked on their spontaneous virtuoso improvisations\, the four great artists have stirred even the most reticent listeners from their seats. \nThe Janoska Ensemble’s debut album “Janoska Style” was released on the prestigious classical music label Deutsche Grammophon in 2016 and attained gold status within a year. This concentrated versatility of the Janoska Ensemble allowed it to break new ground in the choice of its musical material on the album REVOLUTION\, which released internationally at Deutsche Grammophon in 2019. In homage to the four ingenious Liverpoolers\, the Janoska Ensemble has arranged top Beatles hits in Janoska style for their album. Their latest 2022 album\, The Big B’s\, originated as started from their own strength in improvising and then asked themselves who the greatest improvisers in classical music were. They came up with the names Bach\, Beethoven and Brahms\, whom they view as the main role models for the ensemble\, yes\, even their patron saints. Then they looked a little into the modern age\, and immediately took Bernstein\, Bartók and Brubeck on board. Thus the Big B’s\, which release globally August 5th. \nRoman Janoska plays a violin kindly loaned to him by Dr. Christian Kuhn. \n \n \n \n \n \n Interested in this event and not a member? SUMMARY:Harp vs. Harp | Impresario Club & Musica Viva!
DESCRIPTION:Please Note: This event has changed to virtual only.\nThis concert documentary will dive into the lives of Switzerland-born harmonica player Grégoire Maret and Colombian harpist Edmar Castañeda to learn what inspired their musical careers\, collaborations\, and the unique style they bring to their instruments. \n\n\nAbout Edmar Castañeda (Colombia): \nSince arriving in the United States in 1994\, Colombian-born harp virtuoso Edmar Castañeda has forged his own distinctive path in music. He brings not only an unfamiliar instrument but a wholly original voice to jazz\, branching out into a world of different styles and genres. His wide-ranging career has been remarkable for discovering a brilliant role for the harp in jazz\, then continuing to innovate and spark creativity from a wealth of formidable collaborations. His latest CD\, Live in Montreal\, features the latest in an ever-growing history of thrilling partnerships\, an utterly unique duo with the electrifying Japanese pianist Hiromi.\nhttps://www.edmarcastaneda.com/\n \nAbout Grégoire Maret (Switzerland): \nGrammy winner\, Swiss born harmonica player and composer\, Grégoire Maret moved to New York City at 18 years old to study at the New School University. Over the course of the past decade\, Grégoire has emerged as a unique and compelling new voice across a wide spectrum of the modern jazz world. That his chosen instrument – the harmonica – is a relative rarity in the genre is one element in his singular sound\, but far from the whole explanation. After all\, the extensive list of heavy- hitters who have enlisted him for their own projects is unparalleled: Herbie Hancock\, Pat Metheny\, Cassandra Wilson\, and Marcus Miller are some of his most prominent employers\, none of whom have the patience to employ novelty for novelty’s sake.\nhttps://www.gregoiremaret.com/\n \nExplore Membership

SUMMARY:Happy Birthday Beethoven! | Impresario Club & Musica Viva!
DESCRIPTION:The legendary Janoska Ensemble invites you to Vienna to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of Beethoven’s birth in the Austrian city where he spent much of his life composing his most eminent works. \n\n\nAbout Janoska Ensemble (Austria): \nThe musical universe is infinite and the galaxy of best-loved composers alone contains thousands of musical suns. Stylistically\, though\, these are often musical light-years apart. The Janoska Ensemble has set out to span intergalactic distance with its unique synthesis of musical worlds and its venture has won it an enthusiastic international public in a remarkably short time. The four young progenitors of this art – each with a superb classical training – have combined their individual musical attainments to perfection: Ondrej\, František and Roman Janoska (three brothers from Bratislava) and their brother-in-law Julius Darvas (born and bred in Konstanz) are already successful in repeated engagements on four continents. This fingerprinting – with an amazing range of expression from moving to thrilling – naturally shows up in the ensemble members’ own compositions.\nThe Janoska Style possesses the rare ability to enthuse dedicated followers of totally opposing genres. Its vast reserves of positive energy electrify an audience after just a few bars; by the time they have embarked on their spontaneous virtuoso improvisations\, the four great artists have stirred even the most reticent listeners from their seats.\nThe Janoska Ensemble’s debut album “Janoska Style” was released on the prestigious classical music label Deutsche Grammophon in 2016 and attained gold status within a year.\nThis concentrated versatility of the Janoska Ensemble now allows it to break new ground in the choice of its musical material on the album REVOLUTION\, which will be released internationally at Deutsche Grammophon on March 15th 2019. In homage to the four ingenious Liverpoolers\, the Janoska Ensemble has arranged top Beatles hits in Janoska style for their album. \nRoman Janoska plays a violin\, kindly loaned to him by Dr. Christian Kuhn. \nJanoska Ensemble\nOndrej Janoska\, Violin\nRoman Janoska\, Violin\nFrantišek Janoska\, Piano\nJulius Darvas\, Double Bass \njanoskaensemble.com\n\n \nExplore Membership
